Understanding Electronic Repeat Dispensing (also known as Batch Prescriptions)
Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) is an NHS system that allows you to receive your regular repeat medicines without needing your GP to approve each issue one at a time. Instead, your GP can authorise a batch of repeat prescriptions in advance, which your nominated pharmacy can then dispense at the agreed intervals.
How it works
Your GP reviews your repeat medicines and, if suitable, sets up an electronic repeatable prescription.
They authorise a number of issues in one go - for example, a supply every 28 days, repeated six times.
This means you can receive around six months of medicine, one supply at a time, without needing to request each issue from your GP.
Your nominated pharmacy will dispense each supply at the correct interval until the batch runs out or you need a review.
Why it’s helpful
Fewer requests to your GP surgery.
A smoother, more predictable supply of your regular medicines.
Ideal for stable, long‑term conditions where your treatment doesn’t change often.
