How effective is oral contraception?
Updated
The NHS reports that both the combined and progesterone-only pill have the same rate of effectiveness. If used ‘perfectly’ (exactly as instructed with no missed doses), the oral contraceptive pill is considered to be more than 99% effective. With ‘typical’ use (missing an occasional dose), this drops to 91% effectiveness. In comparison to other forms of contraception, the pill offers one of the highest levels of protection from unplanned pregnancy.
